Masson sees the body as a place on which political and social dynamics and tensions fall: a veritable battlefield where the forces that shape our identities and relationships manifest themselves. In his work, these dynamics become the object of scrupulous investigation, turning our gaze towards gestures that leak emotionality, power, resistance or oppression.
Both works on show at Adiacenze are presented as forms of study of the behaviour of two different groups of men, placed in a neutral space, a decontextualising white space, within which their behaviour can be observed almost scientifically.
In You and me you and me just like us just like me against you against me (2024; 06:49), the artist focuses on the dynamics of toxic masculinity, in particular interrogating the movements of a group of young men between corporeality, violence and the dynamics of collective performativity of virility. In Encore une nuit sans Georges (2024; 12:27), on the other hand, the focus is on a group of middle-aged men invited to remember their friend, and the artist's father, who died ten years ago. The small, unconscious and uncontrolled gestures represent an attempt to resist and control emotionality and suffering in the face of themes such as absence and mourning.
